As the Crow Flies is a story about Charlie — a queer 13 year old girl who finds herself stranded in a dangerous place: an all-white Christian youth backpacking camp. It has been nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize (2013), an Eisner Award (2014), and an Ignatz (2016), and won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators (2016). Updates usually happen once a week.
On average, 1.33 colored pencils are sharpened into oblivion per page.
Melanie Gillman is the cartoonist behind this story. They hold an MFA in comics from the Center for Cartoon Studies, and currently live in Tulsa, OK. This is their second all-colored-pencil graphic novel. Their first, “Smbitten”, is a lesbian romance about swing-dancing and vampirism, and is available here as a pay-what-you-want download on Gumroad.
